The architect for the new Accokeek Library, Greg
Lukmire, did listen to the community's wishes at the February meeting
of the Friends of the Accokeek Library. "The overall concept, design and
space layout [of the new Accokeek Library] are admirable, and it is exciting
to see this effort of so many years now so close to completion," a group
from the Friends of the Accokeek Library wrote after seeing the preliminary
architectural plans for the library. They also applauded the use of attractive
materials throughout the structure.
The preliminary plans showed a meeting room
for 75 with small
kitchen, a coffee room, a glazed bay and outdoor patio at the northwest
end of the reading room, a children's room with a semicircular amphitheater
and computers, a computer area for adults, and a tower visible from Livingston
Road.
The Accokeek group urged that the library construction
be coordinated with the Park and Ride lot and the shopping center next
door. They were concerned that there is only room for 30 parking spaces
on the Library land and felt that parking could be accommodated at the
Park and Ride if there were cooperation.
It was impossible to arrange for the larger
community to see the preliminary drawings with only a few hours notice
of an informal viewing. The need for accelerated construction was stressed.
